Royal Opera House

With a theatre on this site since 1732, the Royal Opera House is steeped in centuries of history. The current theatre was designed by Edmund Barry and opened in 1858. Many of the rooms still boast the original architectural features from this time.

The stage has played host to some of the world’s greatest performers from Pavarotti to Callas, Nureyev and Fonteyn. After a major redevelopment completed in 1999, the Royal Opera House now combines elements of the original Victorian theatre with state of the art backstage facilities to great effect. As the home of world-class opera and ballet, the Royal Opera House remains a standard for national and international excellence.
